Molar pregnancies and gestational trophoblastic neoplasias (GTNs) are rare diseases and most gynecologists and pathologists encounter only a few cases during their careers.However, accurate diagnosis, appropriate follow-up, and timely treatment are essential, as they allow cure rates exceeding 98%.
To ensure that all patients receive the highest standard of care, the Belgian Registry for Gestational Trophoblastic Diseases was established.
Its mission is twofold:
- To ensure that all patients receive optimal diagnosis, follow-up, and, when necessary, treatment, tailored to their individual situation.
- To centralize all cases, thereby expanding knowledge of these diseases and further improving diagnosis, follow-up and treatment for future patients.

When should I register my patient to the molar registry?
A patient can be registered as soon as the diagnosis has been established. As patient consent is required, we encourage you to discuss registration with your patient as early as possible.Early registration ensures prompt expert review, follow-up and guidance regarding your patient’s case.

Why should I register my patient to the molar registry?
Given the rarity of gestational trophoblastic diseases, most gynecologists and pathologists encounter only a limited number of cases.Centralization of care is therefore essential to build expertise, improve knowledge and ensure optimal patient management.
Registering your patient in the national database guarantees that her case is reviewed and followed by expert pathologists and gynecologists.
In addition, both you and your patient will have a dedicated point of contact at the reference center for any questions or concerns.
What benefit has the registration for me as a healthcare professional?
Registering your patient provides several direct benefits for you as the treating physician.Registration of your patient ensures:

What benefit has the registration for my patient?
If a patient agrees with the registration of her molar pregnancy or GTN this will also have some direct benefits for her:
- Expert pathological review of her diagnosis
Her tissue sample will be reviewed by a specialist pathologist who has experienced gestational trophoblastic diseases, ensuring the most accurate diagnosis possible.
- Expert gynecological review of her case
Her case will be continuously monitored by an expert gynecologist from a reference center, guaranteeing that you receive the most appropriate follow-up and, if needed, treatment tailored to your specific situation.
- Direct access to the reference center
She will have direct access to a specialized team at the reference center, where she can ask questions, share concerns, or seek guidance at any stage of her diagnosis, treatment or follow-up.
Can I also register myself as a patient?
We recommend that you first discuss this with your treating physician, as registration may have been overlooked at the time of diagnosis. To avoid disrupting the physician–patient relationship, it is preferable to clarify this with your doctor.If, for any reason, your treating physician refuses or neglects to register your case, you may proceed with self-registration. This can be done via the “Register a patient” button at the top of the page.
Self-registration ensures that your case is reviewed by expert gynecologists and pathologists and that you receive optimal diagnosis, follow-up, and, if required, treatment.
